چکیده

Abstract This study seeks to draw connections between the grant proposal peer-review and gender representation in research consortia. We examined implementation of a multi-disciplinary, pan-European funding scheme—EUROpean COllaborative RESearch Scheme (2003–2015)—and reviewers’ materials that this generated. EUROCORES promoted investigator-driven, multinational collaborative multiple scientific areas brought together 9158 Principal Investigators (PI) who teamed up 1347 international consortia were sequentially evaluated by 467 expert panel members 1862 external reviewers. found systematically unfavourable evaluations for with higher proportion female PIs. effect was evident evaluation outcomes both reviewers: applications from share scientists less successful selection received lower scores Interestingly, we systematic discrepancy evaluative language written review reports assigned reviewers works against participants. Reviewers did not perceive as being competent their comments, but they negatively sensitive high ratio within consortium when scoring proposed project.

Does Gender Matter in Grant Peer Review?

One of the most frequently voiced criticisms of the peer review process is gender bias. In this study we evaluated the grant peer review process (external reviewers' ratings, and board of trustees' final decision: approval or no approval for funding) at the Austrian Science Fund with respect to gender. The data consisted of 8,496 research proposals (census) across all disciplines from 1999 to 2...

In this environment what a researcher wants and needs is a " level playing field " to ensu...

Gender differences in grant peer review: A meta-analysis

Narrative reviews of peer review research have concluded that there is negligible evidence of gender bias in the awarding of grants based on peer review. Here, we report the findings of a meta-analysis of 21 studies providing, to the contrary, evidence of robust gender differences in grant award procedures. Even though the estimates of the gender effect vary substantially from study to study, t...

The peer review process for awarding funds to international science research consortia: a qualitative developmental

Evaluating applications for multi-national, multi-disciplinary, Background: dual-purpose research consortia is highly complex. There has been little research on the peer review process for evaluating grant applications and almost none on how applications for multi-national consortia are reviewed. Overseas development investments are increasingly being channelled into international science conso...
